MY 82-YEAR-OLD MOTHER WAS HOLDING HER HOSPITAL BAG WHEN MY WIFE REFUSED TO LET ME USE HER CAR.

“YOUR MOTHER ISN’T MY RESPONSIBILITY,” SHE SAID COLDLY. I STARED AT HER, UNABLE TO BELIEVE WHAT I HAD JUST HEARD. I DIDN’T ARGUE. I SIMPLY TOOK MOM’S HAND AND WALKED AWAY. BUT THE NEXT DAY, MY WIFE CALLED ME THIRTY-EIGHT TIMES, DESPERATE FOR AN ANSWER SHE NEVER EXPECTED.

My eighty-two-year-old mother stood in our hallway with her hospital bag in her hands when my wife looked directly at her and said, “Not my problem.” Her appointment was just forty minutes away, my car was being repaired, and the SUV parked in our driveway was the only vehicle available. I had spent years excusing my wife’s behavior, but seeing my mother lower her eyes in humiliation made me understand how much I had allowed her to suffer.

“Vanessa, she needs to see her specialist,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady. “We have been waiting three months for this appointment, and I only need the car for a couple of hours.”

My wife hardly glanced up from her phone. She was dressed in expensive yoga clothes for brunch, holding an iced coffee, while our SUV keys sat beside her designer purse.

“Then find another way,” she replied. “I have plans with my friends, and I’m not rearranging my entire day because your mother can’t manage her own appointments.”
