“Max, what is this?”
He didn’t answer.
And suddenly, I understood that this wasn’t just an attempt to embarrass me anymore.
Something much bigger was happening.
Three weeks earlier…
I had been sitting in the office cafeteria when Edward noticed that I was staring at my phone.
“You look like you’ve seen a ghost,” he said.
I turned the screen toward him.
It was the wedding invitation.
Edward read Max’s message and shook his head.
“He actually wrote that?”
I nodded.
“He wants me to bring our daughters. He even included a plus-one just so he could make fun of me for being alone.”
Edward sat down across from me.
“You know what your problem is?”
I raised an eyebrow.
“What?”
“You still let that man decide how you feel about yourself.”
His words stayed with me long after lunch ended.
